Main difference is that civ 5 is turn based and age of empires is more of an rts. like the previous poster said, civ 5 is way deeper and the way to victory is more open.. Civilizations (commonly abbrieviated as civs) are playable factions in age of empires online. there are currently six available civilizations, three pro and three free-to-play/premium civs. there were three classes of civilization.. Age of empires 3 seems to be one level down from grand strategy per se (more tactical emphasis) but still has you control the destiny of major civs (english, japanese, germans, native americans etc) and allows for more combat oriented gameplay..
