We installed age of empires ii this morning and started the game without rebooting. the game froze and we did a hard reboot. upon rebooting, the system indicated that windows 7 was basically an illegal copy and shut down a bunch of services (no network, no anti-virus, no audio drivers, areo theme disabled, etc).. I heard that aoe2 isn't compatible with windows 7, and that you need to turn windows xp compatability mode on, by modifying the setup.exe file, but i cannot find this file. i run the aoe2 disk, and then type into the home button search bar, "setup.exe" and searched all disks and files on the computer and i cannot seem to find it.. I've recently gotten back into age of empires 2 and wanted to run the original disc version i have on my windows 7 ultimate 64 bit install. however, when i went to run the game, it showed it running in task manager then it closed..
Unfortunately, getting age of empires to work in this modern day is a bit of a pain. the game was built on network technology known as ipx that has since gone the way of the dinosaurs. so far gone, in fact, that microsoft decided not to include it in vista and windows 7..
